Race & Ethnicity
All people of all ethnicities and races are welcome in the LGBTQ society.
How many Black or POC (People of Colour) LGBTQ celebrities can you think of, compared to white LGBTQ celebrities? Not many I bet! With this lack of role models it’s not surprising that many Black/POC LGBTQ students can find themselves segregated and isolated even within their own community.
The double discrimination of racism and homophobia can be a tough and painful experience for those who are faced with it, and coming out can often be more difficult for Black and POC LGBTQ students, with religion sometimes creating a barrier, whether this is perceived or actual. The LGBTQ society acknowledges these extra difficulties for Black and POC LGBTQ students and are actively working to come up with solutions to these problems and to give a voice to Black/POC LGBTQ students.
We are currently trying to establish a working relationship with the Global Students Society to better address the issues facing foreign LGBTQ students.
